Built in 1890, The Villa Mantegazza is an original period Italian family house just a short stroll from the centre of Cernobbio, the fashionable shore side village on in the south of the lake near to the city of Como, and the famous Villa D’Este.

The Villa Mantegazza is steeped in local history and to this day is still owned by the same family having been passed through generations. The original owner was the artist who painted stunning frescos and paintings inside and out for the Villa D'Este. Built in an eclectic, yet quintessentially Italian style the Villa recalls many details from earlier periods and is filled with stunning furniture in heavy carved wood. Outside it has some impressive stone figurines and stonemasonry. The exterior and Interior of the Villa also has many completely original and stunning frescos. For the first time, the villa will open its doors to guests exclusively with Bella Como.

The Villa Mantegazza sits in a quiet road and from the road can barely be seen as. To the front there is a private garage to park your car. Through an iron gate you immediately enter the lovely gardens that are well maintained and in a classical style, Along the stone path you pass the raised terrace area with table and chairs, then through the gorgeous pergola covered in fruit bearing vines that winds its way along the garden to the house. The gardens are a lovely place to relax and enjoy the sun as they are very private and peaceful.

At the front of the house there is a small set of stone steps leading to the heavy wooden front door. Everywhere you will see stunning features and frescos.

Through the front door you enter the hallway which has a stone and iron staircase leading upstairs. The floors are tiles in old Italian ceramics and the walls simply paint washed.

To the left is a dining room with its stunning frescoed ceiling, garden window, open fireplace and heavy oak furniture. The room is filled with original period art too.

From the dining room you enter the kitchen. The kitchen very much dates from the past when the owner of the house would have never ventured into the kitchen! It’s very basic, and not in the style of the house. It’s functional and clean and features a cooker, dishwasher, and fridge freezer. From the kitchen there is also access to an area of the house that would have been occupied by staff. It’s not used presently.

From the hallway and right you enter the sitting room with garden window, open fireplace and frescoed ceiling. The furniture is simple with sofas and it has a TV.

From the sitting room there is a door that leads to a hallway. From the hallway there is a double bedroom with garden window. It has heavy wooden furniture in the style of the villas and the period.

From the same hallway there is a bathroom with WC and shower.

Back to the entrance hallway and up the stone stairs to the first floor you will greeted with the most stunning feature of this house. Double doors lead out from the landing to a stone balcony terrace with table and chairs. From here you have a glorious view across lake Como to the city of Como, including the Duomo. It’s an awe inspiring view that is very unique.

To the left you will find a twin room with beds that can be made double or as two singles. The floors are in original cotto stone, frescoed ceilings, lake facing window, and a large private terrace with iron railings and table and chairs.

To the right there is an impressive bedroom suite with a stunning carved bed and furniture, cotto floors, lake window, and frescoed ceilings. A door in the bedroom it leads to a small hallway that then leads to a bathroom with bath and shower that has just been refurbished. The hallway can be closed off to make the bathroom and bedroom private.

Again from the landing there is another bathroom, recently refurbished, that has a shower.

From the balconies and first floor windows you have lake views but these can be obscured by trees depending on the time of year. From the first floor there is access to the roof space that has an unused bedroom. The Staircase to this room is steep and is dangerous for small children.

There are other rooms around the villa adding to its interest and architectural appeal but are closed off as is the taverna below.

Over the next few years the owners intend to preserve and lovingly restore the property. Once complete Villa Mantegazza will be an important villa in Cernobbio but for now some aspects of the interior are in need of work or modernisation, and this has been reflected in the rental rates for the 2010 season. During the season there will be no renovations. Work will only be carried out during the closed season.

The garage is quite small and is not suitable for large cars.
