Just launched for 2009 - Villa Riva Di Pianello. A delightful, family villa directly on the lake.

The gorgeous stone Villa Riva Di pianello sits directly on the lake in a natural cove in the pretty villa of Pianello del Lario. With stunning views and a large garden you can enjoy Lake Como from a rare and unique position, lake side.

A short drive along the lake to the north of Menaggio on the sunny west shore leads you along a winding lake side road to Pianello Del Lario. After exiting the lake road and taking the quiet village lane into Pianello the lane passes through an area of amazing natural beauty.

After reaching a private lane and driving down towards the lake you reach the villa. Imposing wrought iron gates and a stone wall flanked by vines and other flora set the scene and hint at what you will find inside. The electric gates reveal the property, which is made from mountain stone, and heavy alpine timbers.

The drive way is ample to park your car or cars. All around you there are trees, flowers, and quaint little cottages. An old farm building and a country garden to the rear frame a babbling stream that passes by the property (fenced to be safe for children) that makes its way down to the lake.

Walking further down the drive way to the front of the Villa reveals the size and character of the building with its large stone balcony, wooden shutters, and crisp whitewash. The garden sprawls out in front of you, with a lovely pergola and stone terrace near to the house for eating out, then well kept lawns leading down to the lake. At the end of the garden it is gated, then leads onto a pebble beach to the lake front, from which you can swim, or just sit and relax with the lake at your feet. The garden is fenced and on both sides too, so the garden is child friendly.

Immediately opposite the pergola, underneath the villa is a large vaulted taverna, which although is not used, has a bathroom with shower and toilet that can be used when outside in the gardens. You can also store any sports equipment or bikes too.

To the side of the Villa you walk up some stone steps to reach the entrance of the Villa, inside, you will find generous accommodation arranged over three floors.

Through the wooden front door you immediately enter the day room. The walls are all whitewashed, and on the floor there are chunky Lombardy tiles. It has a cosy living area with comfortable sofas and chairs, a TV, and solid wooden Lombardy day furniture. There is a window to the side with shutters to keep the heat out. The room feels very inviting and will leave you feeling immediately at home.

To the left there area few steps leading up to country kitchen complete with its large open fireplace. Directly in front and to the side of you when you step into the kitchen are large pairs of doors that lead out to a panoramic balcony. When open the light pours in and shows you the lake and surrounding mountains in all their grandeur. Step out onto the balcony with a coffee or glass of wine and you will be treated to some glorious views. The kitchen itself solid wood with a country style table and chairs. The kitchen is well equipped and has everything you will need for preparing fantastic Italian dishes.

Again from the living area, and to the right leads to two double bedrooms, both with double beds, wardrobes and quality furniture. The rooms are of a good size with a good finish. In between the bedrooms there is a large Bathroom with bath, over bath shower, bidet and WC.

From the hallway there are a set of wooden stairs that lead upstairs. At the top of the stairs there is an open area with a couch bed. The landing area is finished in solid wood with large alpine beams and exposed woodwork.

From the landing is a large double bedroom with double bed, and single sofa bed. It too has exposed beams. There is also an interconnecting door that can be left open or locked that leads to another room with a hammock and a large single bed, that could sleep one adult or two children. The window in the room is low to the floor but has protective bars.

Farther on there is a store/dressing room with hanging, and another bathroom with shower and WC.

The quality of the interior is both comfortable, of quality and is very typical of the region with its use of local stone, alpine woods and traditional artisan craftsmanship. It has a very accommodating family appeal it is suited to family groups as it has very flexible sleeping arrangements.

The Villa Riva di Pianello is situated in the village with good amenities, however as with most properties in the region our opinion is that a car is not essential but is preferable. With so much to see and do, a car does give you flexibility. However with this Villa it is not considered essential.

Pianello has some great walks along by the lake. Unlike many areas of Lake Como you can walk for some distance along the lake shore without interruption.

Within easy access on foot you have a selection of cafes, bars, and restaurants. Behind the villa in the old village is a general store and a bakers, with bread baked daily. The Ferry point in Pianello is easily walkable and close by is a children’s park.

By ferry you are about 20 minutes from Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo, Menaggio and an hour from Como, so you rest assured that you will be able to take in the sights without setting foot on four wheels if that’s your choice.

The surrounding villages and towns along the lake have everything you will need with supermarkets, cafes and more restaurants, and there is all sorts of sports activities including boat hire, sailing and wind surfing.

Behind the villa there are some stunning hill walks from where you can get back to nature, and take in some incredible sub alpine views.

Pianello is also only about 15 minutes by car from the town of Menaggio with its shops, restaurants and nightlife.

A deposit of 25% is payable once we have confirmed your booking. This can be paid by Visa, Mastercard or Bank transfer. The balance is then payable one month before arrival, by Visa, Mastercard or Bank transfer. A modest charge is made by the owner for heating, it is metered and paid on departure. An average apartment will cost around 45 euro per week for heating in winter. A cash deposit to cover breakages will be collected/returned by the owner on arrival/departure. The amount will be confirmed in your arrival pack.
