Borgo Montenero - Apartamento Romantico. A gorgeous studio apartment in a restored 16th century house, with period features, stunning Italian designer furniture, and incredible views across Lake Como from Bellagio to Tremezzo.

The Borgo Montenero apartments, of which there are four, are situated in the heart of the historic village, or borgo, of Bonzanigo. One of the hamlets that makes up the village of Mezzegra, in the heart of the Tremezzina area of Lake Como. Tremezzina, meaning three halves, is where the three legs of the lake meet. Villages such as Bellagio, Menaggio and Tremezzo are all close by, making Borgo Monte Nero the perfect base for your Lake Como vacation.

With elements of the building dating back hundreds of years you can be sure that you will be immersed in the culture and history of one of lake Como most historic and important villages that now is a Centro Storico – a highly protected area where development and preservation are given great importance.

When you enter the village of Bonzanigo you enter the past. The cobbled lanes, narrow alleys, and stunning buildings create an atmosphere of old Italy. At the end of one of the lanes, Via Monte Nero, next to the walls of an ancient monastery sits the Borgo Monte Nero. The building towers up above the stone arches that support it.

Through the main entrance, a heavy wooden with a large iron sliding bolt you enter the hall. The high vaulted ceilings and marble stairs stay cool in summer and warm in winter.

After climbing the marble stairs you then arrive back in the open air, on the large and quite stunning terrace with its views. To the rear you have old borgo houses and the mountain from which the building takes it name, Monte Nero (Black Mountain). Surrounding you, you have stunning stone walls and amazing architectural features. To the front you have the lake in all its glory with panoramic views.

Appartamento Romantico.

From the impressive hallway and through an original old wooden door you enter the stunning Apartamento Romantico, a gorgeous vaulted room with open fire place and large windows into the stone vaulted gallery lane below.

The large living space for two is an incredibly intimate and romantic space. Its stone construction with graphite slate tiling on the floors and cool whitewashed walls keep it cool and fresh in the summer and cosy and warm in the winter.

The interior has been designed and arranged by an interior designer.

In the living space you have a small but very well equipped kitchen, specifically designed and made for the room, a table and chairs for two, a white leather sofa and a designer king size bed. Around the room you will find an abundance of coordinating soft furnishings and accessories. The vaulted windows windows either side of the bed with silk drapes have a gorgeous aspect out onto ancient cobbled streets below and into a stone vaulted portico with some lake and village views.

For your convenience there is also a cupboard, drawers and a wardrobe, plus plasma TV, DVD player and WiFi.

Through two large antique wooden doors you enter the bathroom which is in a stone room previously used as a cool wine store. Tiled in chic white Italian tiles, the bathroom is as romantic as the living space. With a free standing designer sink, WC and a large shower built into the rock wall.

Back out on the stone terrace downstairs, each apartment has its own table and chairs. There are sun loungers too. The terrace is a haven of peace and tranquillity, and is a restful place. During the day it is a gorgeous suntrap, with its own Fontana from which you can drink the water off the mountains.

At night, when lit, the terrace becomes very romantic with its dramatic lighting and candles on the stone.

From the vaulted entrance hall in a room under the stone stairs, there is a dedicated laundry for guests use. It has a washing machine and hanging space.

There is also a DVD library and book library/exchange for use of the guests.

Apartamento Romantico - Sleeps two. Combined living space/kitchen/diner with double bed, bathroom with shower, shared sun terrace, laundry room. DVD. Cots can be hired for €30 per week but guests need to provide their own cot linen.

In the nearby village of Cadenabbia, on the lakefront is a private swimming pool and lido with bar that can be used by Bella Como guests for a small daily charge. Under 12 years go free. In Tremezzo there is also a gorgeous lake side public park with fountains and a bar/cafe.

Due to its old village location, Borgo Montenero does not have allocated parking but there is ample free parking nearby. Due to its ancient origins, vehicular access to the village centre is limited, so for those with a car expect to walk approx 200 metres form your parking space to the property.

Out and about:

Walking is both easy and enjoyable around this part of the lake, and with Borgo Montenero a car is not considered essential.

A 5-minute walk into the village will reward you with fresh bread from the bakers, a choice of two general stores, and a green grocer who sells local produce that has just been picked or pulled. Two minutes further on and you are by the lake. The piazza also has a the villages focal point, wonderful family run café that is open most days from dawn till late – it’s an authentic Italian café where locals meet on the way to work for a brioche and espresso, or after work for a relaxing glass of Prosecco.

There is also a good selection of restaurants within walking distance including “Risorgimento” which has to be one of the finest eateries on the lake. Mezzegra is in the centre of the recently opened “greenways”, these give you clear routes (denoted by beautiful green granite slabs and steel markers) for some of the best walks around the lake.

Close by there is also a lovely children’s park, and an excellent tennis court that can be booked with the local commune.

Down by the lake there is a gorgeous public park that has just been refurbished, with large greens, stone fountain, and children’s play area, and a little further on an extensive waterside frontage with some very nice walks.

Mezzegra has regular bus services from the village piazza and within walking distance you can catch the ferry from either Tremezzo or Lenno from where you can travel in minutes to Bellagio, Tremezzo, Menaggio or Varenna.

Best place to stay = review of lake como, Guardian newspaper 3 september 2010

Forget the pricey lakeside villas with pools: you won't find a better spot to sip an aperitivo and watch the sun set than on the terrace at Cioccolato, one of four beautiful apartments within the Borgo Montenero building in the cobbled streets of Bonzanigo. Each of the modestly priced homes boasts a spectacular view of the lake and a pleasingly modern, comfortable interior. Amid the ancient setting, Wi-Fi and flat screens may seem incongruous but are nevertheless welcome. The company you book it through, Bella Como, is run by two charming English expats, Dave and Karen who know the area inside out and are happy to serve as free-of-charge concierges.

Great location, good value, will definitely look to book through Bella Como again.
Would be good if basics like hand soap, salt and pepper could be provided in the property.

We had our honeymoon here and it was just gorgeous. Romantic and very very well done. The village was lovely too.

many thanks to Bella Como for their hospitality.

we will definately be back, its a special place for us now!!

Hi Dave many thanks many for recommending the Borgo Montenero in Mezzegra. We loved it so much. The Borgo is stunning. We had our own private table on the terrace which was just lovely. We sat out most evenings and enjoyed meeting other guests too for a few drinks. It was very very nice.

Terry and i will be back and will recommend you to our friends. If any other guests read this review, you must go too!!!

Dear Bella Como,

what a change!!! for the first time a holiday where the real thing was even better than the pictures.I am not making complaint but it was very very hot.

We loved it very much, and will maybe return in springtime when not so warm.

Mia Petersen and family (we had two apartments, Romantico for me and husband, and Panna for children and friend)

thnakyou Bella Como. We fell in love again.

We were very impressed with the service we received and the apartment was exactly as described and beautifully maintained.

Lovely accommodation in a beautiful location.

Excellent - great accomodation, great price, friendly service. The perfect opposite of all the things you dread when booking a holiday. Thanks!!!!!

Fantastic studio apartment with lots of space and facilities in a quiet village setting. The shared terrace was huge with great views of the lake and we had a fantastic time. Lots of advice on things to see and do from Dave - thanks!

We enjoyed our stay. The view from the terrace was beautiful. The location of the apartment in the upper part of the village with its tiny cobblestones was how I expected a real Italian experience.
the terrace next to ours was not the best view with its table and chair but is privetly owned and David did explain that he could not trespass.
Apart from that, everything was perfect and I would use BellaComo again.

Cecile (France)

We had a very good week's holiday in Mezzegra. Our studio apartment was ideal and plenty large enough for just the two of us.

The only criticisms we might have were as mentioned to David - no breadknife and only one tea towel.

Overall, a very enjoyable week in a lovely apartment. Shame you could not have organised the weather better!

Loved it ........

lovely relaxing hoilday thank you!

Great service and many thanks for organising a dinner booking. Very knowledgeable of the area and activities and availability of activities, will definitely recomend

We had a fantastic time in Lake Como and a large part of that was down to the apartment. The location was ideal and we had everything we needed (lots of useful touches such as washing up liquid and hand soap being provided). Will be recommending to others. Thanks for a wonderful holiday!

Nancy and I really enjoyed the property. There is nothing like staying in the middle of the local population. a hotel just would not be the same. We enjoyed local color and have already passed your information on to several friends. I cannot possibly say anything negative about the property or our stay in Como. We will be booking one of your properties again when we return.
All the best.

We had a wonderful holiday in Lake Como and were extremely happy with the property. We arrived very late and David was waiting in the rain for us, David from Bellacomo was excellent and even brought us a bottle of prosecco to enjoy on the balcony.
We would have appreciated a change of towels and bed linen for a six night stay. The overall experience was fantastic and we would certainly recommend the company and property to our friends and consider a return visit.

Kind regards
Jackie Smith

Overall we were happy with the accommodation, but were initially disappointed that the apartment did not have any views (at all), apart from the separate (shared) terrace. Room was clean and comfortable. No air conditioning so had to leave windows open which was a bit of a concern as apartment overlooks a public passageway. Also a bit noise due to people walking by at night and chickens in adjacent yard in the morning. Location was good although some distance up the hillside which could be a little tricky to find later at night.
Security Question : How much is 3+4 ?
