Borgo Montenero - Apartamento Cioccolato. A gorgeous, romantic, first floor apartment with large private balcony, in a restored 16th century house, with period features, stunning Italian designer furniture, and incredible views across Lake Como from Bellagio to Tremezzo.

The Borgo Montenero apartments are situated in the heart of the historic village, or borgo, of Bonzanigo. One of the hamlets that makes up the village of Mezzegra, in the heart of the Tremezzina area of Lake Como. Tremezzina, meaning three halves, is where the three legs of the lake meet. Villages such as Bellagio, Menaggio and Tremezzo are all close by, making Borgo Montenero the perfect base for your Lake Como vacation.

With elements of the building dating back hundreds of years you can be sure that you will be immersed in the culture and history of one of Lake Como's most historic and important villages that now is a Centro Storico – a highly protected area where development and preservation are given great importance.

When you enter the village of Bonzanigo you enter the past. The cobbled lanes, narrow alleys and stunning buildings create an atmosphere of old Italy. At the end of one of the lanes, Via Monte Nero, next to the walls of an ancient monastery sits the Borgo Monte Nero. The building towers up above the stone arches that support it.

Through the main entrance, a heavy wooden with a large iron sliding bolt you enter the hall. The high vaulted ceilings and marble stairs stay cool in summer and warm in winter.

After climbing the marble stairs you then arrive back in the open air on the large and quite stunning terrace with its views. To the rear you have old borgo houses and the mountain from which the building takes it name, Monte Nero (Black Mountain). Surrounding you, you have stunning stone walls and amazing architectural features. To the front you have the lake in all its glory with panoramic views.

Appartamento Cioccolato
A little further on and up some more stone steps you will reach Apartamento Cioccolato.

Once inside you will be amazed at the quality of this very special apartment that, as the name suggests, is a rich palate of chocolate and cream. It combines period features like the exposed oak beam ceilings and modern furniture in sumptuous tones. The walls are whitewashed and there are cappuccino ceramic floor tiles to create a rich yet light ambience.

The living space is a combined area for living, dining and cooking. The kitchen area has gorgeous Wenge cabinets. It has a dishwasher and everything else you need for preparing a great meal in.

The dining area features a Wenge dining table for four, with Zebrano wood and chrome chairs; it also has French doors leading to the panoramic balcony.

The balcony, which is accessed from not only the living and dining area but also the bedroom spans the entire apartment and has been restored with stone tiles and beautiful iron railings. The views are breathtaking – a wide view from Bellagio to Tremezzo and across to Lenno. Nothing short of stunning.

The living area has a large sofa that converts into a queen size bed, two designer lounge chairs and a large set of French doors, once again leading to the balcony. There is also a flat-screen TV and WiFi for your entertainment.

From the living room you enter a stone lobby that leads to the bathroom, with a little bath and overhead shower, tiled in luxurious rich chocolaty tones with designer accessories and chrome detail.

From the living space and through large wooden double doors you enter the spacious bedroom that has two wood-framed single beds that can also be pushed together (although there will be a gap so probably not ideal for honeymooners!). There are large double wardrobes, a designer reading chair with table and lamp. To the left of the beds there are French doors opening out onto the large balcony. From the beds it is possible to take in the view across the lake.

Back out on the stone terrace downstairs, each apartment has its own table and chairs and there are sun loungers too. The terrace is a haven of peace and tranquility and is a restful place. During the day it is a gorgeous sun-trap, with its own Fontana from which you can drink the water from the mountains. At night, when lit, the terrace becomes very romantic with its dramatic lighting and candles on the stone.

Due to its old village location Borgo Montenero does not have allocated parking but there is ample free parking nearby. Due to its ancient origins, vehicular access to the village centre is limited, so for those with a car expect to walk approx 150 metres from the shared parking to the property.

Though this apartment does not have a washing machine there is a laundrette located in the centre of the town.

Apartamento Cioccolato - Sleeps up to four. Combined living space/kitchen/diner with sofa bed and private balcony, bathroom with small bath and overhead shower, bedroom with twin beds, shared sun terrace, TV. Please be aware there is a charge of €70 for final cleaning payable on arrival. Cots can be hired for €30 per week but guests need to provide their own cot linen. From May 2015 there will be WiFi available.

In the nearby village of Cadenabbia, about 3km away, on the lakefront is a public swimming pool and lido with bar that can be used by Bella Como guests for a small daily charge. In Tremezzo, about 1.5km away, there is also a gorgeous lakeside public park with access to the lake for swimming, fountains and a bar/cafe.

Out and about.
Walking is both easy and enjoyable around this part of the lake, and with Borgo Montenero a car is not considered essential.

A five minute walk into the village will reward you with fresh bread from the bakers, a choice of two general stores, and a green grocer who sells local produce that has just been picked or pulled. Two minutes further on and you are by the lake. The piazza also has a the villages focal point, wonderful family run café that is open most days from dawn till late – it’s an authentic Italian café where locals meet on the way to work for a brioche and espresso, or after work for a relaxing glass of Prosecco.

There is also a good selection of restaurants within walking distance including “Risorgimento” which has to be one of the finest eateries on the lake. Mezzegra is in the centre of the recently opened “greenways”, these give you clear routes (denoted by beautiful green granite slabs and steel markers) for some of the best walks around the lake.

Close by there is also a lovely children’s park, and an excellent tennis court that can be booked with the local commune.

Down by the lake there is a gorgeous public park that has just been refurbished, with large greens, stone fountain, and children’s play area, and a little further on an extensive waterside frontage with some very nice walks.

Mezzegra has regular bus services from the village piazza and within walking distance you can catch the ferry from either Tremezzo or Lenno from where you can travel in minutes to Bellagio, Tremezzo, Menaggio or Varenna.

Payment Terms

A deposit of 25% is payable once we have confirmed your booking. This can be paid by Visa, Mastercard or Bank transfer. The balance is then payable one month before arrival, by Visa, Mastercard or Bank transfer.

There will be a small surcharge of 5 euro per debit/credit card transaction. Bank transfers may incur charges by your own bank and occasionally by the receiving bank also so please check beforehand.

A modest charge is made by the owner for heating, it is metered and paid on departure. An average apartment will cost around 50 euro per week for heating. A deposit to cover breakages will be collected/returned by the owner on arrival/departure. The amount will be confirmed in your arrival pack.

The location was unique and quite stunning. The property was perfect. We had high hopes from the website description but this the reality far surpassed this!

Forget the pricey lakeside villas with pools: you won't find a better spot to sip an aperitivo and watch the sun set than on the terrace at Cioccolato, one of four beautiful apartments within the Borgo Montenero building in the cobbled streets of Bonzanigo. Each of the modestly priced homes boasts a spectacular view of the lake and a pleasingly modern, comfortable interior. Amid the ancient setting, Wi-Fi and flat screens may seem incongruous but are nevertheless welcome. The company you book it through, Bella Como, is run by two charming English expats, David and Karen, who know the area inside out and are happy to serve as free-of-charge concierges.

The views from the apartment are stunning and the apartment itself is of a high quality and very spacious. Access to the apartment building is not suitable for the elderly due to the cobbled areas leading to it from the village and its a real struggle in high heels! Overall we enjoyed our stay in the apartment, but at times did feel quite remote as in there's no where close to nip to for a meal or drink etc. The region of Lombardy is simply Beautiful and we would love to come back again in the future. David was very helpful and was at the end of a phone call when needed.

It was a great place to stay and we really enjoyed relaxing on the terrace with a bottle of wine at night watching the sun go down , Dave's service was amazing and thanks for bringing your own DVD player as the one in the apartment was un-useable.
I still cannot believe there is no washing machine in this place if you are here for a week washing things in the sink is not fun.

we took three apartments, Argento, Cioccolato, and Panna. Haveing 12 people in 3 apartments was just perfect as we had lots of time together but privacy when needed. The apartments have everything are are luxurious. internet, DVD, the lot. Furniture and kitchens are top quality.

Normally we do a villa, but this was much better. We must come back again. Village, shops , lake etc all wonderful.

Accomodation would have been a 5 had the beds been a little more comfortable and less creaky.

Loved our second stay at Borgo Montegro as much as our first stay. Last time we were there was December and therefore parking wasn't a problem. This time parking was more of an issue and therefore our only criticism. However we don't go to Italy to experience an abundunce of spacious carparks so all in all the lack of parking is minor! We found the apartment very comfortable and easy to 'live' in. Lovely towels and so nice to have decent wine glasses!!

Information and advice offered prior to and during our stay from Dave was very helpful.

Overall we had no complaints with the accommodation - one or two items would have been helpful such as extra bedding for the cooler nights. Also as we arrived over Easter perhaps a 'welcome hamper' would be a good idea as the local shops were closed for a couple of days.

Overall a great place to stay and we would definitely recommend.

We did not find the bed very comfortable. The property could easily get a 4 star rating if the bed was comfortable with a quality double mattress (and longer - no good for anyone over 1.8m tall) and better quality pillows (and more of them).

If you could fix the little bits that are broken (door from the lounge to the balcony, kitchen tap, bath plug), supply more toilet paper and add a Nespresso machine (you could sell a pack of cartridges as an optional extra), it might warrant 5 stars.

Very pleased with the apartment despite the climb up to it! Great views of the lake.
The apartment was clean and had all we needed. I gave 4 stars for the accomodation because the beds were not that good. Singles for a start and very creaky. Otherwise very good and we had a great holiday. The position of the apartment was excellent. We were able to walk into Lennon or Tremezzo and access the ferries on the lake very easily.
